Why Biodiversity?

North Karelia region consists of a massive stretch of forest land which covers approximately 70 % of the region. It is also home to approximaterly 2,200 lakes. Lake Pielinen, one of the lakes within the Biosphere Reserve, is the fourth largest in Finland.

Many activities around this region (both commercial and private) rely on or involve nature and natural resources. The proportion of hunters, fishermen, berry- and mushroom-pickers is clearly above the average figures in Finland. For example, the proportion of hunters in North Karelia is twice as big as the average.

The Biosphere Reserve collaborates with its partner network in creating awareness among North Karelian residents on how to minimize loss of biological diversity. Proper care and conservation as well as sustainable development strategies are the approaches by the network.
