North Karelia Biosphere Reserve focuses on various areas of sustainable development. The core areas are: Diversity, Natural resources, Energy and Climate change.


The Biosphere Reserve's natural resource governance mainly focuses on sustainable forestry and bioenergy carried out with the help of regional forestry programmes and the North Karelian climate and energy programme respectively. Rural areas and agriculture consisting of heritage landscapes and traditional biotopes are no exception and can thereby receive special environmental studies.


Education and research on sustainable development issues in reference to Man and the Environment are also evident within North Karelia region. There are several ongoing projects in addition to studies and researches based on sustainable development in institutions and universities across North Karelia.
