KARLANDS at the 30th Anniversary of Kostomuksha Strict Nature Reserve
KARLANDS was a key participant in the 30th anniversary celebration of Kostomuksha Strict Nature Reserve on July 9-12, 2014. The event was a combination of a scientific conference and a field excursion. Boris Raevsky presented the GIS database structure of the Karlands project with a special concern on the Strictly Protected Forest Areas in the Republic of Karelia. The participants had an opportunity to see with their own eyes the former settlements that were moved away from the border mainly to the Kalevala region during the 1950-‘60s. A special issue of scientific articles will be published as a result of the field research carried out during the expedition. The last day of the celebration was devoted to a joint outdoor event together with local inhabitants from Finland, Kalevala, Kostomuksha and other regions.
