North Karelia encompasses rich natural resources. Diverse expertise in the bioenergy and forestry research sectors are the strenghts of the region. In terms of energy self-sufficiency and the share of renewable energy, North Karelia already exceeds the EU and national climate targets. The regional economy is supported by decentralised energy production based on renewable energy sources.

North Karelia Biosphere Reserve  shares a common vision with its partner network  to make North Karelia an oil-free region. It foresees North Karelia as a carbon neutral and over self-sufficient region in renewable energy production where fossil oil is not used in energy production.

Climate change and the challenges it poses are also seen as a possibility for the region to develop innovations and new business opportunities.
