KARLANDS PARTICIPATED IN THE SECOND "European Forest Week"

The highlight of the week: EU-Russia cooperation was seminar organized by European Forest Institute THINKFOREST on emerging opportunities for EU-Russia cooperation on forest-based sector governance.

 

The event brought together governmental representatives from EU and Russia (Rosleskhoz), research organizations, non-governmental organizations’, industry sector officials and other interested parties

KARLANDS’ NETWORKING WEEK IN ILOMANTSI MODEL FOREST

 

H:\\Karlands\\photos\\news\\Ilomantsi model forest_Group photo.JPGKARLANDS’ networking week gathered specialists from countries across Europe (Russia, Finland, Poland, and Sweden among others).  Project partners arrived to Joensuu (Forestry capital of Europe) on Monday (28.10). The networking week commenced on 29.10 with a road trip to Ilomantsi from Joensuu whereby participants got acquainted with forestry history and development trends in North Karelia Region. Risto Ikonen presented ongoing researches at Mekrijärvi research station.

Various presentations from Dr. Sari Pitkänen “History of forestry conflicts in Ilomantsi), Dr. Timo J Hokkanen “North Karelia Biosphere Reserve and importance of networking and communication”, Mr. Maxim Trishkin and Dr. Eugene Lopatin “Different approaches for assessment of sustainable forest management level by new methods” were shown.

 

 

Mr. Alpo Hassinen also gave a live performance on how to use UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) for small-scale inventory and recording the state of landscapes in different time span. KARLANDS was an example of social media integration in project purposes. Other activities during the week were: Excursion and visits of Patvinsuo and Petkeljärvi National Park, Traditional Karelian Restaurant Parpenpirtti, smoke sauna at Mekrijärvi Research Station, eastern point of Finland – the Finnish-Russian border, Wolverine and nature programme at Erä-Eero, Erä-Mantsi among others.

KARLANDS’ INTENSIVE WEEK IN PETROZAVODSK 7-11 OF OCTOBER 2013

“Seminar, Conference, Discussion with Natural Resources Minister

& visibility in Russian National News”

ENPI KARLANDS held a seminar in Petrozavodsk, Russia on 7th of October.  The morning session was internal with active participation and presentation from all the project’s partners. Afternoon session was open to all interested stakeholders, students/researchers and teachers of Petrozavodsk State University, representatives of NGOs, ordinary people, project partners’, and other groups. The participants expressed their interest and gratitude towards the project its results.

 

 

H:\\Karlands\\photos\\news\\AT THE MINISTRY.JPGOn 8th of October, KARLANDS (one of the co-organizers of the GreenBelt conference) was represented by various project partners with several diverse landscape based presentations. Partners with presentations were: Dr. Eugene Lopatin and Mr. Maxim Trishkin from University of Eastern Finland, Dr. Timo J Hokkanen and Ms. Daisy Silvennoinen from Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for North Karelia, Prof. Olga Gavrilova of Petrozavodsk State University, Mr. Sergey Tarkhov from Kostomukshskiy Strict Nature Reserve and Mr. Denis Macsimov from Directorate of Strictly Protected Nature Areas in Republic of Karelia.

 

 

H:\\Karlands\\photos\\news\\karlands in news.JPGDuring the parallel session organized a round table of ENPI projects, Dr. Eugene Lopatin proposed a project’s portal to be used for publishing the results in online format. KARLANDS team held a meeting during the same week with the Minister of Natural Resources in Republic of Karelia Mr. Victor Chikalyk, where the up-to-date status of the project and future plans were presented by Dr. Eugene Lopatin (Project coordinator).
